Brad, amen to your personal productivity policy. Being always on to external inputs (email, twitter, facebook, cellphone) is killing us all both at work and our personal pursuits. I’m trying to do something like that as well. I must confess that my normal status on Gmail is invisible. I’m amazed at work by the number of people including management who find it reasonable to have their email always on and instantaneous and demand the same of others. I think it is ridiculous. Is that what we exist for? To answer email? I just close my door, go do not disturb on the phone, and close my email on my webbrowser. And it has yet to hurt me. I’ve not missed anything important because of it. But I have got work done. And I HATE automatic pop up email notifications.

I’ve adopted a new policy for productivity. In the mornings, I check my email, twitter, facebook, text messages, etc, reply to everything, and then turn ALL of it off and work on whatever I have to work on. Every couple of hours, I turn my email and phone back on and check in, but I have large chunks of time uninterrupted by “fritterly” distractions.

Also, I think a fritter is a tasty apple dessert that’s good with coffee. When should we go get one?

Good thought provoking stuff! I am sorry to admit I am an expert fritterer. I never intend to be. It just happens. It comes from not having concrete, measurable goals AND a deadline.
I think the deadline is the key piece of it all. When you are under a deadline, there is focus and no time for frittering. Without a deadline, it is possible to procrastinate endlessly.

Absolutely! This is a great post…the process of making something quality involves a significant amount of time that few are willing to commit to (bread in particular). But it’s always worth the effort: God is always at work.
